Our first Syrah release for the 2016 vintage, the 2016 Purisima Mountain Vineyard Clone #1 Syrah is drinking beautifully upon release. Classic Clone #1 aromas and flavors of smoke, espresso roast, game, and blackberry fruits are abundant in this vintage. The wine is full, rich, and round with great texture, balanced acidity, and a long finish. Once again a terrific vintage of Clone #1 Syrah! Drink 2018 – 2030.

The 2016 Syrah Clone #1 Purisima Mountain Vineyard emerges from two blocks on the property. Tasted next to the other wines in the range, the Block #1 is distinguished by its amplitude and volume. Blue/purplish stone fruits, licorice, spice, leather and menthol all fill out the wine’s frame effortlessly. The Clone #1 is a big wine, but its balance is impeccable. Here, too, the 60% new oak is well judged. Drink 2020 — 2028.”

Even deeper colored, the 2016 Syrah Clone #1 Purisima Mountain is 100% Syrah aged 16 months in 40% new French oak. It offers more smoky, meaty, barbecue aromas and flavors, full body, bright acidity, and slightly more structure and depth. It needs 2 – 3 years of bottle age to really come together but should see its 15th birthday in fine form. Drink 2018 – 2021.”

    Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine

If anything, a bigger and more powerful wine than its cellarmate listed just above, this is the second of two very impressive Syrahs from Beckmen in 2016. It is a big, full-bore expression of the grape that, like its companion, makes no bones about being very ripe, but, even as it finishes with a catch of last-minute heat, it is immense, blackberry fruit and unrelenting spice that are its enduring message. It will certainly never be accused of timidity and will likely be criticized in some quarters as being over the top, but for all its considerable size and richness, it is a solidly structured, unassailably varietal rendition that promises to age famously.”
