2018 Ballard Canyon PMV Grenache Rosé

2018 brought a sudden change to our weather pattern at a most unusual but very beneficial time last August. After a hot July the weather turned moderate to cool and has stayed that way since. I do not know what happened but suddenly our mild climate became mild again, creating a beautiful more normal harvest on our vineyards. I do not think any wine benefited more from this than the Rose.

Harvested under pristine conditions in early October, the wine fermented long, slow and cool in tank well into November where it stayed until bottling in February. With a nice salmon, pink hue the wine is lighter in color than previous vintages but packed with the same flavor intensity. The wine expresses the red berry fruits and spice this rosé has become known for, with vibrant acidity and a long fruit filled finish. This is a great vintage of the PMV Grenache Rosé, possibly the finest ever produced!

From start to finish this is pure, forward grenache, with a salty top note adorning red plum flavors that are both sweet and tart. It’s fresh and mineral, with a fine-grained finish.

The 2018 Grenache Rosé Purisima Mountain Vineyard is another stellar wine in this range. Creamy and inviting, the Rosé has an extra bit of texture in this vintage that is quite appealing. A dollop of Syrah adds body and richness to play off the bright floral and red berry fruit. Drinking window: 2019 — 2023.

This is a rosé with depth. On the nose you can enjoy notes of strawberries among floral hawthorn, and jasmine. There is also some underlying orange blossom and ripe melon, as well a bit of mint. The palate is rich, and balanced by excellent acidity. This bottle is absolutely worth the $20 and can hang on its own or with some grilled fish or poultry.
