October 2024 Release

The 2022 PMV Block Six Syrah will be billed and released starting October 1, 2024.

2022 Purisima Mountain Vineyard Block Six Syrah

100% Biodynamic certified Syrah (Ballard Canyon AVA)

Block Six was the first section of Purisima Mountain Vineyard to be farmed Biodynamically, a process that started in 2002. Certified like the rest of the vineyard in 2009 by Demeter, Block Six is the highest block on Purisima and is planted in soils with significant deposits of chalky limestone. This combination of elevation and soil contributes to the Block Six being our finest Syrah offering from our vineyards since its first bottling in 2003. 

Winemaker Description: 2022 was the final and most dramatic of the decade long drought on our vineyards. Extremely low rainfall and hot temperatures throughout the season delivered a small crop of intense fruit. The harvest, however, was defined by a historic heat spike in the first half of September where we scrambled to pick the fruit that was ripe. Thankfully, the healthy limestone and clay soils throughout Block Six helped the vines survive the heat spike, and we were able to harvest this block in much better conditions in early October. The lack of rainfall and heat in 2022 leads to a Syrah that is ripe, fruity, and filled with concentrated flavors; yet, the wine remains impeccably balanced showing great acidity, length, and elegance reflecting the conditions under which the grapes were harvested. 2022 is a very impressive vintage of the Block Six Syrah that will age gracefully for the next 18+ years.

January 2025 Releases

The 2022 TLB and 2022 Purisima Red Wine will be billed and released in the beginning of January 2025.

2022 TLB

85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah (Los Olivos District AVA)

The 2022 is the 16^th vintage of our beloved TLB. The core of the wine is a field blend of the best Cabernet and Syrah grown on the Thomas and Judith Beckmen Estate Vineyard. It combines the best of our Cabernet Sauvignon fruit with the juicy mouthfeel of the Syrah. Named for our founder, Thomas Lawrence Beckmen, this field blend is a wine he dreamed of making when he started the winery. It is named in his honor and is a tribute to his continuous hard work and dedication to crafting world class wines.  

Winemaker Description: The 2022 TLB is loaded and complex, exhibiting aromas and flavors of black currant, black berry, dark cherry, dark chocolate, mocha, licorice, leather, and a hint of peppery spice. Like the other 2022 wines, there is amazing balance between the concentration and intensity of the wine’s flavor profile and its seamless, velvety structure. The 2022 TLB has tremendous focus, elegance, and a long finish filled with mouthwatering acidity and fine tannins.  2022 is another can’t miss release of the TLB Red wine that will age beautifully for the next two decades or more.

2022 Purisima Red Wine

100% Biodynamic certified Syrah (Ballard Canyon AVA)

Purisima Red Wine is our benchmark wine that is only produced from our finest vintages. Over the last decade, we have made seven vintages of this wine including this 2022 release. Due to the smaller than normal crop and the excellence of these specific blocks, this vintage of Purisima Red is a unique blend of fruit from Clone 1 as well as some of our own rooted blocks 383, Estrella, and BB selections. The heavy clay in the lower parts of the vineyard was beneficial to the incredible quality of the Syrah from these blocks that when blended together make for a very special bottling of the Purisima Red Wine.

Winemaker Description: Concentrated, layered and long, the 2022 Purisima Red Wine displays incredible purity and is one of the most complex Purisima Red wines we have ever bottled. The combination of these blocks and selections overdelivers with fantastic blackberry, pepper, smoke, bacon fat, chocolate, and garrigue flavors and aromas. The wine has seamless tannin structure and very fine acidity that carries the complex flavors to a long finish, where black and blue fruits mingle with spice and pepper. Like the past few vintages of the Purisima Red Wine, this vintage will be bottled unfined and unfiltered and should drink beautifully for the next 20+ years. An epic release of the Purisima Red Wine.

March 2025 Release

The 2023 PMV Syrah Clone #1 will be billed and released in the beginning of March 2025.

2023 PMV Syrah Clone #1

100% Biodynamic certified Syrah (Ballard Canyon AVA)

Our selection of Clone #1 was sourced from vines planted in 1868 at Best’s Vineyard in Victoria, Australia. Although we grow eight different clones of Syrah at Purisima Mountain Vineyard, this clone is our flagship single-clone bottling. Simply put, when it comes to Syrah, Clone #1 is a rock star! The grapes for our Clone #1 Syrah are grown on a very steep, limestone-laden hillside, featuring two different rootstocks: 110r and 5c. In the winery, we tailor the winemaking to accentuate what makes this clone special: its old-world aromatic profile.

Winemaker Description: There’s no other way to say it…the 2023 Clone #1 Syrah is outstanding. Showing even greater concentration than the 2022, the 2023 has incredible balance, amazing structure and supple tannins that make it the finest Clone #1 that we have ever produced. Smoke, mocha, blackberry, plum, cured meats, roasted expresso, and a hint of pepper are some of the complex flavors and aromas in the 2023 bottling. Round, seamless texture through the mid-palate firm up on the back end where the tannins and acidity combine to create layers of structure that carry the complex flavors on the finish that lasts for minutes. For the first time, the two Clone 1 blocks, grown on different rootstocks, were co-fermented and blended at harvest. A true highlight of the entire 2023 vintage, the 2023 Clone #1 Syrah will go down as a legendary vintage of this wine that will age beautifully for 20 years.

April 2025 Releases

2023 Purisima Mountain Vineyard Block Eight Grenache

100% Biodynamic certified Grenache (Ballard Canyon AVA)

Block Eight is a special Grenache block that was planted in 2005. It features our own Beckmen Grenache selection, cultivated using cuttings from our finest grapevines. This proprietary selection is own-rooted and head-trained in the classic gobulet (“cup”) style of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Grown in soils similar to our Purisima Mountain Vineyard Grenache, this block produces small clusters, with small, intense berries. A notable wine in our portfolio for over a decade, we have brought back the Block Eight from the very special 2023 vintage to include it in the Futures pre-sale.

Winemaker Description: Welcome back, Block Eight! And what a return… With a beautiful garnet color, 2023 Block Eight Grenache is filled with red and blue fruits, baking spice, raspberry, white pepper, and milk chocolate. These complex flavors are supported by wonderful natural acidity and big tannins making this wine the most structured of our Grenache releases. Aged and fermented in one of our Amphoras, the clay helps to accentuate the structure of the grapes, adding a fineness to the tannins where you can almost taste the clay pots on the back end of the wine as it mingles with the bold fruit, chocolate, and spice flavors. The addition of whole clusters (33%) also provides additional backbone to the wine. The 2023 Block Eight Grenache will be bottled without fining or filtration keeping the expression pure and focused. Exclusively produced for the Futures pre-sale, the 2023 Block Eight wine drinks amazingly well today but will age gracefully for the next 15+ years.

2023 Purisima Mountain Vineyard Grenache Libre

100% Biodynamic certified Grenache (Ballard Canyon AVA)

Our evolution with free standing, bush vine Grenache added another chapter to its story with the addition of Block 1 Grenache on Purisima Mountain Vineyard. Block 1 vines are grown more like a small tree than a bush, as we are pushing and spreading the fruit zone out vertically instead of horizontally. The idea of “Libre” was born years ago - the idea of the vines freely expressing themselves by allowing them to grow as they want to grow and not how we want them to grow. This 100% Grenache wine was created from a stunning crop off the Block 1 and a tiny, exceptional crop from Block 8. Viva “LIBRE”!

Winemaker Description: 2023 was a stunning vintage with our first truly wet winter/spring(record rainfall) setting the stage for a fantastic long and mild growing season. The harvest was beautiful with the weather holding steady, allowing the grapes to ripen at a pace that made it one of the most pleasurable vintages we have ever had. The 2023 Libre highlights the best of our head trained blocks on Purisima. The fruit intensity, color, structure, and balance in the Libre are some of the best we have ever seen in our Grenache bottlings. The wine is rich and fruit driven with strawberry, kirsch, grenadine, pepper, and baking spice aromas and flavors. The 2023 Libre is a serious Grenache wine with low pH, high acidity, and tannins that frame and carry the bold flavors on the long finish. Pure, rich, deep, inviting are all great descriptors of this fantastic release of LIBRE! that will continue to evolve for the next 15-18 years, and perhaps a bit longer.
